john dryden was born on the 9th of august 1631. a poet, literary critic, translator, and playwright, he was made poet laureate in 1668. he dominated the literary life of restoration england, to such a point that the period came to be known in literary circles as the age of dryden. walter scott called him “glorious john.”
in 1667, around the same time his dramatic career began, he published annus mirabilis, a lengthy historical poem which described the events of 1666: the english defeat of thе dutch naval fleet and the great fire of london. it was a modеrn epic in pentameter quatrains, and it established him as the pre-eminent poet of his generation and was crucial to his attaining the post of poet laureate. unwilling to take an oath of allegiance to william and mary, he was dismissed from office. he died on the 1st of may 1700 and is buried in westminster abbey
