“the intercept has a d-mning report in regard to our intelligence agencies and some of the undercover work they’ve done regarding right-wing extremism here in the united states. now, what this report specifically focuses on and hones in on is the infiltration of white supremacists into our local police departments. now, the incredible thing about this story is that there have been warning signs leading up to what we’re experiencing now. in fact, back in 2006, before obama was elected, the department of homeland security had released a report indicating that there was a growing problem of right-wing extremism here in the u.s., but conservatives fought it so aggressively that the dhs not only retracted their report, they also decided to disband a group of individuals who were tasked with fighting right-wing extremism here in the u.s. well, fast-forward to today and we have even more information about what’s going on. according to the intercept, the fbi counter-terrorism guide from april 2015 notes that domestic terrorism investigation focused on militia extremists, white supremacist extremists, and sovereign citizen extremists often have identified active links to law enforcement officers and explains in some detail how bureau policies have been crafted to take this infiltration into account. so federal investigators have been reluctant, though, to publicly address that threat or to point out the movement’s longstanding strategy of infiltrating the law enforcement community.”
[verse 1: curt kennedy]
the firing squad is hiring
even the fbi’s inquiring
domestic terrorism conspiring
right-wing extremists that hate america’s hirelings
spread their rhetoric with intelligence
infiltration, precincts throughout the nation
homeland security documents the ‘festation
2006 because of the reputation
of veterans, congressmen, conservatives promised them
lose this memo or else there will be problems then
janet napolitano apologized to the honchos
for saying that white supremacists recruited veterans pr-nto
that were disgruntled but had good military training
and hated the way the country let black people not be in chains and
so they became the police, the strategy’s working, let’s hang ’em
but use bullets, intimidation, torture, and mayhem
now let me guess, you thinking that i’m overreacting
google “john burge,” chicago pd is in action
fired and prosecuted, oh looky here
he tortured 120 black men in his career
and that’s 1 man, go to cleveland, texas, and florida
san francisco, los angeles, oh, there’s more
of this troublesome new reality, homeland security, fbi warns
what we have been saying you said was fallacy
[hook: curt kennedy]
and you saying it’s just a few
but you don’t know how many and you don’t know who
and you saying it’s probably just a few
but you don’t know how many and you don’t know who
so pardon me if it’s hard to wait for the facts
when the fbi warned supremacists have attacked
so pardon me if it’s hard to chill and just trust
when dhs is saying they coming after us
[verse 2: curt kennedy]
it ain’t just my imagination or playing race cards
i got the documentation
fbi concerned with obama’s assassination
’cause white supremacist groups grew when the homey came in
114 then in 2007, but over 1,000 groups in 2011
becoming law enforcement, triple-k endors-m-nts
a license to k!ll with a badge, what a deal
don’t be mad this is real, this is more than how i feel
this ain’t identity politics or social justice ills
and still many will find ways to blame me
but ask the feds why police don’t adjust their trainees
’cause it’s not illegal to belong to a hate group
and the first amendment says you’re free in what you say, too
but how does that work if you thinking i’m beneath you
and your ideology teaches we need to beef, too?
it doesn’t really matter if i comply then, does it
if my kids are in the car or if my phone was really buzzing?
if it’s my mom or my cousin, if i’m soft or if i’m bolder
this is sad that it depends on who pulls me over
and there’s a lot of good cops, i ain’t talking ’bout them
i’m talking ’bout the ones the fbi is warning will sin
i’m trying to help y’all to see these concerns aren’t a trend
director fbi, james comey, listen to him
[hook: curt kennedy]
and you saying it’s just a few
but you don’t know how many and you don’t know who
and you saying it’s probably just a few
but you don’t know how many and you don’t know who
so pardon me if it’s hard to wait for the facts
when the fbi warned supremacists have attacked
so pardon me if it’s hard to chill and just trust
when dhs is saying they coming after us

“all of us in law enforcement must be honest enough to acknowledge that much of our history is not pretty. at many points in american history, law enforcement enforced the status quo, a status quo that was often brutally unfair to disfavored groups. it was unfair to the healy siblings and to countless others like them. it was unfair to too many people
i am descended from irish immigrants. a century ago, the irish knew well how american society — and law enforcement — viewed them: as drunks, ruffians, and criminals. law enforcement’s biased view of the irish lives on in the nickname we still use for the vehicles we use to transport groups of prisoners. it is, after all, the “paddy wagon.”
the irish had some tough times, but little compares to the experience on our soil of black americans. that experience should be part of every american’s consciousness, and law enforcement’s role in that experience — including in recent times — must be remembered. it is our cultural inheritance
there is a reason that i require all new agents and -n-lysts to study the fbi’s interaction with dr. martin luther king, jr., and to visit his memorial in washington as part of their training. and there is a reason i keep on my desk a copy of attorney general robert kennedy’s approval of j. edgar hoover’s request to wiretap dr. king. it is a single page. the entire application is five sentences long. it is without fact or substance, and is predicated on the naked assertion that there is (quote) “communist influence in the racial situation.” the reason i do those things is to ensure that we remember our mistakes and that we learn from them
one reason we cannot forget our law enforcement legacy is that the people we serve and protect cannot forget it either. so we must talk about our history. it is a hard truth that lives on
a second hard truth: much research points to the widespread existence of unconscious bias. many people in our white-majority culture have unconscious racial biases and react differently to a white face than a black face. in fact, we all, white and black, carry various biases around with us. i am reminded of the song from the broadway hit, avenue q: “everyone’s a little bit racist” — part of which goes like this:
look around and you will find
no one’s really color blind
maybe it’s a fact
we all should face
everyone makes judgments
based on race.”
