this fantasy is that it is possible to fish sustainably, legally, and using workers with contracts making a livable age and still deliver a 5 ounce can of skipjack tuna for 2 dollars and 50 cents that ends up on the grocery shelf only days after the fish was pulled from the water thousands of miles away

prices that low and efficiencies that tight come with hidden costs. and it is the manning agencies that help in the hiding. hidden costs are by no means distinct to fishing since the industrial revolution other industries have been allowed to dump carbon into the air for free for example and that hidden cost to the public has accumulated into what we now call climate change

there is however far less awareness of the hidden costs that exist in fishing because the ocean are such a removed realm. fishing companies would most likely struggle to stay financially afloat if they had to recruit and handle the logistics for the men who work such dangerous jobs at impossibly low wages. lawlessness at sea and the willingness of consumers and governments to ignore these hidden costs, were kind of a subsidy helping keep many of these fishing fleets financially afloat
