letra de tuam baby massacre - brian barron

Loading...

take a trip with me to 1961
to a place called “the home” run by the bon secours nun
in a town called tuam, in county galway
where they’re chaining the gates on its very last day

many a poor woman was taken inside
for a child out of wedlock was a shame to hide
the neighbors would scowl and the priest condemn
so her family would send her away in the end

once that the little sweet baby was born
away from their mother they were immediately torn
then she’d work and slave there for a year with no pay
and be sent home alone one lonesome day

the mothers did moan and the babies did cry
for they’d never meet again till the day that they die
some knocked on the door every day for years
but the nuns would say “be gone with those tears”

now some time later in seventy five
two boys jump the walls in the orchard to hide
their fall cracks a slab and they push it aside
to find skeletons of the babies the nuns tried to hide

such a terrible sight they never did see
but the priest said “now boys listen to me”
“i’ve said a quick prayer, everything’s okay”
the site was bulldozed the very next day

now a very great woman catherine coreless
she just couldn’t put her poor mind to rest
she heard the local stories and nothing seemed right
so she investigated through many a night

796 death certs she found
but no mention at all of a burial ground
they weren’t in the graveyard, where could they be?
the whole wide world would soon see

the excavation team dug down deep
and what they did find made them all weep
the remains of babies, a couple of months to three
their souls now finally set free

i’ll sing you this song 796 times
once for each of these terrible crimes
the organ it plays, a slow funeral tune
as tuam is lit up by a cold evening moon
