[verse]
sirens they’re blaring on a hot june day
they never really leave from around this way
paint it is setting in terence’s room
he’s gotta get some brushes but he’ll be back soon
trouble on sean o’casey, he’s committed no crime
‘part from being in the wrong place at the wrong time
gets rounded up with three other youths
by the cold-hearted men with their batons and their boots

[verse]
they broke his arm just a few weeks ago
now they’re cuffing him from behind as the crowd starts to grow
brother larry is standing there, as the scene unfolds
a heavy thud inside the van leaves him feeling cold
he’ll be the only one who doesn’t get out, he lets out with a roar
but how could he have known the tragedy in store?
their mother is distraught, so he stays behind
to try to give her some peace of mind

[verse]
now his sister bursts in, larry’s laying on his bed
the gardaí are at the front door, and this is what they’ve said:
terence tried to hang himself in the cell using the light
and right away he just knew that something isn’t right
made amends with his baby mom, they don’t want to fight
got new clothes for a 40th the following night
things are looking up, got his safe pass too
there’s a whole lot of living left for him to do
[verse]
he’s taken to the mater just a minute from their home
but they tell the family he’s at james’ so larry gets on the phone
there’s no-one with those injuries, there’s no-one with that name
oh someone is buying time, confusion is their aim
by the time the family finally gathered by his side
well hanley and campbell are taking his clothes like they’ve something to hide
they say he used his laces but they’re still in his shoes
and the story’s changed that night, in the press release for the news

[verse]
photos at the hospital, they show the story true
there’s bruises on his back and legs, his hands are swollen and blue
the cleaners call right away to surgically wipe the cell
so forensically what really happened no-one’ll be able to tell
the family are praying, terence starts to fight
for 3 months he rages against the dying of the light
summerhill catches fire, you can feel it in the air
well a brother and son’s been taken, the community’s in despair

[verse]
the intimidation starts immediately
the gardaí makin’ hangin’ gestures at the family
politicians blowing hot air, costello and mary-lou
well they gotta look compassionate with an electorate to woo
the inner city comes together, protests growing by the day
they’re demanding answers, they won’t go away
the commissioner appoints hanley to investigate his own man
he was in store street 20 years, they could have been his friend
[verse]
the stone is rolling now, pickin’ up speed
maybe an inquest will provide the answers that they need
but the whole thing is a circus, all the arms of the state in play
the jury splits 4 to 3 anyway
gardaí stories are conflicting, they can’t even settle on one
and no-one can explain where the blood on his clothes came from
why’d they move his body from the cell to the hall?
why’d they take so long to make that ambulance call?

[verse]
now amnesty are calling for a public inquiry
where witnesses can be cross-examined, that’s independent and free
the ombudsman is set up, this is their litmus case
it’s a total whitewash, they’re compromised, it’s a waste
he died behind closed doors, the doors on this closed too
but they’re about to be busted open, a light shined on the few
an old melody ringing out, telling the story anew
for the next generation to sing and keep alive what’s true

[verse]
our homeless under the pillars of the courts and the gpo
will justice ever be served? i don’t really know
the family are laying flowers three times a year
but a sergeant pulls them down each time to keep his conscience clear
and they kiss their kids on the forehead and leave on a little light
to make them feel safe through the middle of the night
and they walk back down stairs, and gently caress their wife
they’ll forever remember taking terence’s life
