the smell of birthday candle smoke
the humming of a song
the words of some old parlour joke
drifting aimlessly along

this was his house since 44
built to weather any storm
it doesnt weather anything anymore
it holds the echo of him here
in all he loved and all he feared
and when the end was drawing near he didn’t run

behind the paper on the wall
written with a marker pen
there’s a message to us all
that we’ll never see again
there’s his pipe beside the bed
a pair of shoes laid out to wear
a thousand words he never said
hanging silent in the air

so much more behind this door
than just an ashtray on the floor
no one’s smoking anything anymore
the house is perched upon a hill
rain leaks on the window sill
there’s so much silence left to fill now he’s gone
he lived a good life that i’m sure
fought for his country in the war
but no ones fighting anything anymore
all the books he never read
that hat no longer on his head
but heaven’s wasted on the dead or so i’m told
