back in puerto rico
i helped the pageant queens
st-tch and sew dresses
i saved a little money
to move here and make my own family
buy the big pretty house that you see on tv…
so what the h-ll is with this permanent smell?
the carpet’s stained, the room’s too small

i hear gunshots as we sleep
and thank god this was not my dream at all
life didn’t go as planned, but i learned to play along
maybe this had to happen to teach me how to be strong
who knows what the future brings? only god above

i noticed something strange
my lipsticks and powders would sometimes be rearranged
when my husband found out our son was that way
he turned off his love, and just left us one day
now i’m alone, in a city not my own
single mother, unemployed…
and while i look for a career my son ends up here
making friends with people i was taught to avoid

and maybe this had to happen

the disappointment doesn’t last for very long
and who’s to say what’s really right and what is wrong?

this isn’t what i would have chose but it’s okay

people can be cruel
this life is not easy
but when your son is a drag queen
at least sewing comes in handy
so i learned how to see a new point of view in love
that’s the most important thing you can do
