too ghastly to comprehend
on top of this monstrous ascent
the impossible door, instead of the drop
hides but solid graveyard floor

as thoughts in my head madly swirl
what perversion has twisted this world
i frantically cradle the hunger for light
stunned, as the puzzle unfurls

past slabs of ancient stone
dim memories darkly loom
i crawl the lands of unknown
forsake this foetid tomb

better to reach out and fall
than be shunned like a ghoul in the night
in obscurity die in isolation
i can no longer recall
aught but frantic craving for light
to end insanity and tribulation

but lo! beyond the mire –
an ivied castle ablaze with light
gleeful gentry in odd attire
so i approach, hopes burning bright

and then – my foot has barely touched the doorstep –
nothing turns out to be what it seems, provides what i thought awaits
surging despair drags fragile illusions back into bottomless depths
for all the congregation turns, in cold fear horripilates

faces distorted, appalled
in display of fathomless light
the whole company stares in consternation
as if bizarrely thralled
by a sudden unspeakable sight
nameless blasphemy chokes the celebration

and rampant chaos ensues
as they break into panicky flight
swoon as mesmerized by hallucination
stumble and blindly plunge through
the mayhem into the night
flee their horrid demise and desecration

from my funereal throne
i was drawn like a moth to the light
just to burn in my own illumination
to yet again stand alone
but for horrified screams in the night
run from some unseen abomination
